We have a Kune Kune pigs… at least that’s what we were told!  As anyone who has raised pigs knows, they love to root, however, Kune Kune pigs are known to be one of the only pigs that don’t root.  We were not ready to commit to a space for pigs to plow around, so the Kune Kune seemed like the right idea for this round.  So far, they have done little to no rooting.

You can use Kune Kune pigs around the edges of pastures to help keep the grass down and eliminate the need for weed whacking.  When using a rotational grazing method, Kune Kune pigs fit right in with a healthy approach to maintaining quality pastures.  We probably won’t set them along the fence line near the walking path.

Kune Kune pigs are supposed to be easy to contain, and docile.  This is our first experience with pigs, we wanted to get something friendly, especially around children.  Kune Kune pigs are some of the smallest pig breeds around and they are extremely friendly.  So far, they got out once.

Pigs can survive (even the winter) on 100% hay and/or kitchen scraps.  Once the weather warms up and we’re growing food in the gardens again, we will supplement with some treats from the garden.  Ours may be spoiled because they don’t seem to want to eat just hay.
