There are bee hives on the south-eastern side of the ranch. They are free to come and go from a caged area wired to keep bears out. Once a bear has determined there’s honey inside, they’ll get in no matter what! If they get zapped with 11,000V first, they may not investigate further.
We lost all our bees in the winter of 2024/2025. About 60,000 more are ordered to arrive in early April 2025. There will be new colonies of each of Saskatraz and Russian-Carniolan breeds.
SASKATRAZ are from Saskatchewan, Canada. They have high honey production, and they are very hygienic for varroa tolerance/resistance. Plus, they’re ready for winters of -22 Fahrenheit!
RUSSIAN-CARNIOLAN are a hybrid. The Russians are a strong breed. Carniolans are usually gentle and non-aggressive, adaptive, and efficient… and the only breed to sting me so far. The combination might be great.
- Bees travel up to 40 miles away from their hive for nectar/pollen.
- Bees pollinate most of the earth’s food supply.
- Avoid pesticides/herbicides. They hurt bees. I know… that’s difficult.
IMPORTANT: Properties on the Martin Slough and Mountain View Pond and all surrounding streets drain to Mountain View Pond. Mountain View Pond drains to our ranch, including past our hives.
